Unfortunately, three of the four cars provided to the movie-makers were destroyed during filming, and only the promo car survived. The car became an immediate dream car for many around the world. The most iconic and famous aspect of the movie, besides maybe Burt Reynolds (The Bandit) himself, is undoubtedly his car, the 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am. The film Smokey and the Bandit tells the story of two bootleggers as they attempt to illegally transport 400 cases of beer from Texarkana to Atlanta, and was the second highest grossing film of 1977 after Star Wars. Trans-Am is a model of automobile from Pontiac used in the 1977 film, Smokey and the Bandit, and its sequels, Smokey and the Bandit II and Smokey and the Bandit, Part 3. The shell is based on system/creator parts in a beautifully accurate exterior complete with gold pin-striping and the giant flaming bird motif, “The Screaming Chicken” as it became known after the 1977 film which launched this car into iconic status.

Many who were in their teens or early 20's when this car hit the streets have come to a place in their lives now, these many years later.

The movie turned this Special Edition black and gold Trans Am into one of the most popular and best known muscle cars of all time. Reynolds' high-speed hijinks in Smokey and The Bandit made him the biggest star in the world, and turned the black and gold 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am he drove in it into an American muscle.
The movie, and car, became so popular that it was singlehandedly responsible for a boom in Trans Am sales. Pontiac hadn’t actually started production of the 1977 model yet (even the car Needham saw in the advertisement was the ‘76 model fitted. Piloting his unforgettable black and gold 1977 Trans Am, Bandit and the crew engage in assorted hijinks, madcap stunts and bedlam along the way. Smokey and the Bandit turned the 1977 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am into a very popular car, but unbeknownst to many, the cars actually used in the movie were 1976-model cars with the 1977 front ends attached. The Trans Am’s last debut was in 2002, and then GM pulled the plug on Pontiac all together in 2009 before the release of the new Camaro. The plot is simple enough as Bandit and his buddy Cledus, along with runaway bride Field, attempt a round trip drive from Atlanta to Texarkana to pickup some beer. Justice, it was stuntman Hal Needham's first stint behind the camera as director. Starring Burt Reynolds as "The Bandit" and a cast of characters including Sally Field, Jerry Reed, Paul Williams, and the incomparable Jackie Gleason as Buford T. Surprisingly, the cast and crew only had to use three Trans Am cars throughout the entire film.

Smokey and the Bandit was responsible for introducing two new generations of the Pontiac Trans Am to the public.
